About Yawa.
Yawa is a dynamic think tank dedicated to promoting and preserving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives on culture, country, climate, and health.
Comprising members from various Indigenous communities across the unceded lands of Victoria, Yawa meets fortnightly in Indigenous-led spaces to discuss and plan activities that align with our mission.
Our primary aim is to foster and maintain connections among Indigenous people, strengthening ties to each other, their communities, cultures, and lands. We emphasise sharing Indigenous wisdom broadly, inviting others to join us on a journey of learning and decolonisation in their relationships with culture, country, climate, and health.
Through inclusive participation, we gather diverse viewpoints and experiences, disseminating this collective wisdom to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous audiences. Yawa also highlights the often-unsung champions within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities who contribute significantly to climate action, cultural preservation, and health.
Our Youth Listening Circles visit schools to promote cultural awareness, encourage youth voices, foster connections, and empower young people as advocates for Indigenous issues and environmental stewardship. By engaging in these practices, Yawa supports the well-being and resilience of our communities and plays a crucial role in transforming broader societal attitudes towards Indigenous knowledge and practices.
